Sydney is Australia's largest city with a metropolitan area population of nearly 4.34 million people (estimated in 2008). It is the capital of New South Wales was the establishment of the first British colony in Australia. It was founded in 1788 in Sydney Cove by Arthur Phillip, admiral of the First Fleet from Britain, and is the oldest city in the country.
Sydney is located southeast of Australia, on the banks of the wide Bay of Jackson. The city was built around Port Jackson, which includes Sydney Harbour. In the city stands the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and their beaches. The metropolitan area is surrounded by national parks which contain bays and rivers. The city has hosted international sports events as the Commonwealth Games, 1938 Sydney Olympics 2000 and the final of the Rugby World Cup 2003. The main airport serving Sydney is Kingsford Smith International Airport, commonly known as Sydney Airport.
Sydney is one of the most multicultural cities in the world and is reflected in their role as the main destination for immigrants to Australia. According to a Mercer study on the cost of living, Sydney proved to be the most expensive city in Australia and the 15th worldwide. Sydney also leads the top 10 cities with better quality of life of the world, in another study by the same company in conjunction with The Economist.
